Project Details:
Corry Village is a graduate school housing project on the University of Florida, Gainesville campus. The project is certified under LEED for Homes 2008 low rise multi-family gut rehab. It consisted of 128 units in 8 buildings.
Challenges:
This project presented a few major challenges. The brick structure in a hot humid climate and the rehab nature of the project presented thermal bypass and ventilation design challenges. Being centrally located on a large-scale university also presented challenges for onsite water management credits that were outside of the norm. Lastly, the project was phased with a multiple-year gap between certifications so many of the team members who were on the initial project development side were no longer there in the second phase.
Solutions:
Our vast experience working in Florida and the Caribbean allowed us to offer solutions for air sealing and insulation that met the needs of the structure in this challenging environment. Steering the project away from exhaust-only ventilation and providing guidance on various air sealing and insulation systems ensured the successful implementation of a long-lasting and durable project. As the project team shifted, extra efforts were made to bring the new team member up to speed on the requirements. Using a local Green Rater/HERS Rater who was familiar with the location also made this process go more smoothly.
